Last time we visited Baguio, we went looking for the common Baguio blankets. Way back in 1993 when I used to live in the city, these Baguio hand-woven blankets were commonplace and could be bought in the market for a hundred pesos. We asked everywhere and could not find one. Vendors say that the old natives who make them already passed on and the younger generation are no longer interested in continuing the craft and tradition, attracted more to the appeals of the modern world. Some vendors say that the raw materials are expensive and could not compete with China-made merchandise. I passed on my Baguio blanket to my son. He used to call it his "gray blanket" and could not go to bed without it.
We pass on the treasures of the old, already gone.
